Serving sizes are too small
I like to eat healthy, or at least try. What does that mean? I try to have a low fat intake while maintaining a high protein intake. Because I try to eat healthy, that means I hafta bother looking at the nutritional content of what I eat.
Now, since I hafta look at the nutritional content, I've noticed something. It seems like serving sizes are pathetically small. And because of this, it makes it really goddamn hard figuring out the true nutritional content of whatever I'm eating. I'm no calorie counter or such and really don't care about what I eat, but I do try and consciously eat well if possible. It's not a very demanding task, but it is a task nonetheless
Why can't they make serving sizes that matter? For instance, the serving size for a bag of chips should not be 3/4cup. It should be the whole damn bag. During the infrequent times I've eaten potato chips, I eat the entire bag all by myself. I'm sure I'm not the only one.
Another example, I like to eat pasta, specifically spaghetti. It's high on carbohydrates and good for energy. However, when I look at the serving size, I'm shocked at how small it is. I like to eat the entire box. Yes, the entire box. That's a full pound of spaghetti. However, the serving size is only for 2 ounces. What does that mean? That I'm eating 8 times the serving sizes so I hafta multiply the nutritional content by 8. While I'm no idiot and can do the calculations in my head (having taken engineering gave me the confidence to do so, I think), it's annoying. Okay, maybe not everyone eats spaghetti like I do. But still, why do serving sizes hafta be so small? Who the hell eats only 2 ounces of spaghetti anyway? I'm sure I don't and I'm sure you don't.
When most people eat, they usually eat perhaps 2x more servings of WHATEVER they're eating. If that's the case, why don't companies make the serving sizes large and recalculate the nutritional value accordingly?
Of course, I know the real reason. With smaller serving sizes, that means the food you're eating seems less fattening because of the nutritional information provided. Afterall, if you eat something that shows 10 grams of fat on the nutritional value located on the back of the package, it seems less threatening than something with 20 grams of fat. It's just too bad that you will naturally eat twice the amount of what the serving size originally is for the former than latter.
Anyway, serving sizes are too small.
